Holiday Party!!!! December 7th @ Samuel Adams JP

It’s that time of year again, the Boston Wort Processors Annual Holiday Party! Once again, our friends at Samuel Adams have been generous to offer to host us at the Pickwick pub (30 Germania St, Boston MA). Plan on coming down to Jamaica Plain, Friday December 7th from 5 PM to 830 PM.

The holiday party will also serve as our December meeting, so it will be your last chance to attend a Worts event before the New Year.

More details on potluck, beer share, etc. to follow. Hope to see everyone there!

AHA Members Rally – Night Shift Brewing!

The American Homebrewers Association is hosting a members rally in our neck of the woods, at Night Shift Brewing. This is a great opportunity to keep up the momentum we have from NHC to continue to make AHA aware of our kick ass club, and to also interact with other local homebrewers who are parts of other clubs, or possibly looking for a club to join. Come on out for all or part of the rally and you’ll definitely see some friendly faces. Make sure to wear your Worts t-shirt!

September 19th, 2018 Meeting Minutes

Location: Sam Adams JP

  • Big thanks to Sam Adams and to our SA host, Eric.
  • Tonight’s theme is cider. There are cidermakers here, the club cider event is coming up, and Tom will talk about making cider later.
  • The October meeting will be Tuesday 16 Oct, 8pm (note later time!) at the Craft Beer Cellar Beercierge in Belmont. Theme of the meeting will be malt steeping, with many samples to taste
  • The club cider buy/ciderfest in Amesbury coming up! Watch your email. [editor’s note: Oct 21, 12-3pm. Cider sign-up is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OzStX9kFLAZuFzja1_dSN-twMffT19DmBTSYfH0Ma1Y/edit?usp=sharing]
  • Holiday party will be here at Sam Adams in December, as per usual -watch this space.
  • Wort advent calendar will be happening again this year – if you’d like to participate, be prepared to have a case of bottled homebrew by mid-November.
  • Cidermakers in the house! Doug, Tom, and Nathan can all talk to you about cidermaking.
  • Competitions:
    •  New England Regional – MCAB, judging on Oct. 20, entries are full, though. Volunteer to judge if you can!
    •   Dixie Cup – MCAB, also full/closed.
    •  Blue Ridge Brew Off – delayed, but seems to be happening [ed note: registration now closed]
    •  Foam Cup – MCAB, still open.
  • The club will pay for shipping when members ship together in our boxes.
  • Competition bad news: Our competition, the Boston Homebrew Competition, is being postponed.
  • Competition good news: We’re going to coordinate and run a Round 1 site for the National Homebrew Competition instead!
  • Relatedly, HomebrewCon and the final round of the National Homebrew Competition are going to be in our neck of the woods next June, in Providence, RI. We should plan to have a big presence there.
  • Other event – AHA rally at Night Shift on October 21, noon to 3pm.
    • Bulk grain buy – Arrives tomorrow. Thanks to J-Sap for coordinating again. He notes that another hop buy will be coming soon as well.
  • New people – two new people introduce themselves and what they like to brew
  • Treasurer’s report: The club has about $10k in the bank. Major spending recently: Shipping boxes, T-shirts, grain for club events. You all are encouraged to think up ways for us to spend money
  • Special report: Jeff Cummings discusses the Homebrewers Jamboree, an annual event in NH. Some abridged notes: It’s a multi-day camping event, popular enough that there’s a waiting list for camping space. Other area clubs have a big presence there, and there are plenty of friends of the club attending. There’s a fun non-BJCP competition on site.
  • Presentation: Tom Bell talks cider.

Worts CIDERFEST 2018

Are you interested in trying some of the best homemade cider in the country? Are you interested in making your own cider? If you answered yes to either or both of these questions, you need to check out the Boston Wort Processors annual Ciderfest coming up on Sunday 10/21 from 12-3 PM.

We’ll head up to Cider Hill Farms in Amesbury (45 Fern Ave, Amesbury, MA 01913) to hang out, try each other’s ciders/beers, and enjoy what will hopefully be a lovely fall day.

In addition Glenn & Karen at Cider Hill has offered to arrange a bulk cider buy for the
club. This will be a custom blend of unfiltered, unpasteurized cider.  The price is $6/gallon, which is approximately 25% off retail.  Ideally, we’d like to set a 5 gallon minimum purchase.  I’d like to get him a head count of how many people will attend the event and a count of how many gallons we’d like to buy.  If you’d like to buy cider but won’t be able to attend the event, please make arrangements to have someone pick up your cider on your behalf.  All cider MUST be picked up during CiderFest on 10/21.

We are on schedule to get a tour with Son Chadd the cidermaker too. For
those that have been in the past, he’s a wealth of knowledge and his ciders
are winning major awards!

*If you’ll be able to join us for Ciderfest and/or if you would like to order cider, please sign up HERE

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OzStX9kFLAZuFzja1_dSN-twMffT19DmBTSYfH0Ma1Y/edit?usp=sharing

Glenn needs to know how many gallons we’d like to order, so *please sign up no later than Tuesday 10/16*.  Please note that this sign up is just for a count.  We will send out a separate link for payment.

October Monthly Meeting

The next Club meeting will be on Tuesday October 16th, starting at 8 PM,  in the Belmont Craft Beer Cellar Beercierge Space.

As a lead up to some of our upcoming experiments, a few worts will be preparing some “malt teas” made with different specialty grains to allow members to better understand their flavors, and the impact of temperature on flavor.

For more information on location please check out the event on our calendar
